Demand Response

Since 1977, Minnkota has operated a voluntary demand response program, allowing consumers to enable remote control of electric heaters and other interruptible loads in exchange for reduced electric rates. This program helps Minnkota manage power resources efficiently and avoid the high costs of acquiring new generating capacities. With approximately 50,000 participants, the program can interrupt up to 80 megawatts in summer and 350 megawatts in winter. The program primarily controls heating systems, with dual heat systems switching to alternate fuels like fuel oil or propane during load control. Additionally, Minnkota purchases power from other utilities and the MISO market during peak periods, resorting to demand response only when market prices are high. This strategic approach not only ensures stable and competitive pricing for off-peak heating but also aligns with Minnkota's commitment to providing reliable and economically priced electric heat.
